Welcome to the next installment in the FIFA Scouting Tips series on the best free transfers in FIFA 17. Today we’re taking a look at left backs that you can get for no transfer fee – you just pay for their wages.

What is a pre-contract?

A pre-contract is an agreement by a player and an agreeing to take his registration at a later date. A club may sign a pre-contract with a player while he is still with another club, by which the player agrees to move to the club at a future date, usually after his contract with his current club expires. Under the Bosman ruling, a player can sign a contract with a new club up to six months before his existing contract expires. There is no transfer fee involved in FIFA 17, and you have the January transfer window only to sign pre-contract players.

Full backs are often overlooked players when compared to strikers or goalkeepers, but they’re hugely important in their own right. Having a player who can defend with skill and attack with power is vital to any team, and that’s exactly what a good full back can do. This article should help you pick up an affordable left back who will win you games.

I’ve reviewed players of at least 78 potential and narrowed my list below down to 3 players who I feel will really benefit your side. I have taken into account age, OVR rating, potential, and wages mainly to give my honest opinion on who will fit your side.

Benoît Trémoulinas – 81 overall, 81 potential

Benoît Trémoulinas is very well rounded and has a high OVR

If you want a player who comes with a great overall and the best balance of stats of any player in this guide, it’s got to be Benoît Trémoulinas. He’s fast and has 87 stamina, he can cross for days with pinpoint accuracy, and his tackling is excellent. He’s also good at intercepting the ball and shutting down attacks, while his 81 short passing means he can start attacks of his own.

That all makes him the perfect player to get if you need someone who is multi-talented and can perform a number of different roles. And as the cherry on the cake, his wages are amazingly cheap for his OVR – just £18,500.

Sead Kolašinac – 77 overall, 82 potential

Sead Kolašinac combines both pace and power

Now heavily linked to Juventus, Sead Kolašinac is a favourite player of mine in FIFA 17 (and has been for a few years now). If you’ve found your defence to be way too leaky, this is the player you need. Not only is he rapid (84 sprint speed), but he’s so strong (87 strength), so he can easily muscle opposition players off the ball when he’s defending.

His tackling is also excellent, as is his stamina, so you can play him at centre back if you need his physical prowess in defence. Train his crossing a bit and you’ll have an asset at both ends of the pitch.

Ismaily – 77 overall, 79 potential

FIFA 17 best free pre-contract left backs

Ismaily is the best option if you’re concerned about Trémoulinas’ age

While Trémoulinas is obviously a great choice, there is an issue – he’s 30, so will start declining after a year or so. But if that’s a problem, you don’t have to miss out – get Ismaily instead. Like Trémoulinas, he’s very well rounded and still has plenty of years to grow. So despite his 79 potential, if he does well he could get up to 81 OVR or higher.

His stamina and speed are his strong points, but he’s also fairly strong and has good defence abilities, so could play a more defensive role if you need him to.

Now here are the best free, high potential left backs in FIFA 17.
