Usually EA release a big update with all of the transfers sometime in early February. However, this year they did it slightly differently. Since FIFA 13 came out, every year the EA team have made updated OVRs and potentials available for download based on real life player performances. Usually these are just slight tweaks, but after some breakout performances a player’s potential can change a lot (Raheem Sterling is a good example). This is rare, though.
So please bear in mind that the information below is based on the updated squads from 2nd February. However, there’s no need to panic if you downloaded the update on 8th February (or any other subsequent update), as most players will not change (or if they do, it’ll be by a small amount). In any case, this year potentials are very flexible, so if a player you’re interested has his potential lowered in an update, he can still reach his old potential if he plays well for you.
The ‘Avai?’ column is short for ‘available?’ (there is not enough space for the full word), and it refers to whether or not each player is available to buy in the first transfer window. ‘Y’ means yes, they are available, whilst ‘N’ means that they’re not. The number after the ‘Y’ or ‘N’ is the amount of years left on their contract. So ‘Y/2′ means that yes, they are available to buy in the first transfer window and that they have 2 years left on their contract. Similarly, ‘N/5′ means they’re not available to buy right away and that they have 5 years left on their contract. The ones to look out for are Y/1, as you should be able to get these players for less than their listed value. Players who are on loan will have a “-” in this column because information on their contracts is not available.
Today we’re going to be looking at wide right players. I find there are two types for this position – right midfielders and right wingers. Right midfielders tend to have excellent crossing abilities and are very useful for providing good service to a big target man in the box. Right wingers, on the other hand, are usually very quick and have good dribbling skills, and are best at beating defenders and creating scoring opportunities. Both types are included in my recommendations below:
- Zakaria Bakkali
- Nathan Redmond
- Wilfried Zaha
- Thomas Ince
I’m putting Zakaria Bakkali first because, although he has a lot starting OVR, he has so much going for him that he’s going to become a real superstar. First of all, and perhaps most obviously, he’s extremely cheap for his potential. He has a five star weak foot and four star skill moves, and is very fast and agile – his balance stat is 92 already, for example. His long shots are one of his strengths and will become a force to be reckoned with, and he has the ‘flair’ trait, which means he can do extra flicks and tricks (such as the rabona) that other players can’t. A chance to get a player like this for under £1m cannot be missed. Although you will not be able to get him in the first transfer window, he may become available in January.
Next up is Nathan Redmond. I chose him because he combines the best elements of right wingers and right midfielders. He is extremely fast, has four star skills and a very good dribbling stat, so he’ll easily be able to beat defenders. As well as that, his crossing is very good and he can score from both close range and from outside the box. If you’re not sure whether you need an attacking winger or an assist-minded right midfielder then go for Redmond, as he can perform both duties equally well.
For a pure winger, however, go for Wilfried Zaha. Although in real life he’s been loaned back to Crystal Palace from Manchester United, in FIFA he’s actually at Palace permanently, which means you don’t have to wait a season to buy him. This can only be a good thing, as he is very fast and only a couple of points short of the ‘dribbler’ speciality. He is also very good at finishing and has four star skills moves, so not only will he create goals but he’ll be there to score them as well. He’s a little expensive but with a high OVR for such a young age, I wouldn’t be surprised if he easily exceeds his
potential.
My final choice is Thomas Ince. His main advantage lies in his versatility – he is adept at crossing and so would make a very good right midfielder, but he can also dribble and score goals, and he’d be just as good on the wing or playing as an attacking midfielder. I refuse to believe that he’s only going to grow eight more points in about eight years, so don’t be surprised to seem him go over his potential of 81. In addition, he only has one year left on his contract so you can pick up a real bargain here.
