FIFA 14 | So You Want A… Right midfielder

If you’ve come looking for a well priced, high potential right midfielder or winger to boost your team’s performances, this is the place to look. The following players I’d recommend as particularly effective:

  • Zakaria Bakkali/Adnan Januzaj
  • Marco Davide Faraoni
  • Ryo Miyaichi
  • Jacob Murphy

My first choice is Zakaria Bakkali because he’s just got it all. He’s already got the dribbler speciality (not many 17 year olds in FIFA 14 have an advanced speciality like that), four star skills and weak foot, sublime balance and blistering pace. He’s going to be causing havoc in the final third, and with 90 potential he’s going to get better and better. You can get him for £4.5m regardless of the £7m his club ask for, but if that’s a little too much for you then turn your attention to Adnan Januzaj. The young winger has been turning heads in the Premier League recently, but you can get him for as little as £1.9m, possibly even less. Although he’s not yet as accomplished as Bakkali in terms of stats, you won’t get many other chances to get an 87 potential player for so little. If Bakkali is too much then Januzaj should be your next stop.

A bit of a different player up next: Marco Davide Faraoni. He’s made the recommendations list because of his flexibility; really, there’s very little he can’t do. He only has one red stat (apart from GK attributes), but he’s got pace, strength, stamina, dribbling, passing and shot power all in equal measure. What makes him even better, however, is that he can defend just as well as he can attack. You can play him at left wing, left midfield and left back and he will be at home in each of those positions, making him the ideal man if you need flexibility or play with wing backs.

My final choice is Ryo Miyaichi. You may notice he’s only got a year left on his contract, and when you consider that he’s one of the fastest players in the game (93 acceleration and 94 sprint speed), has great dribbling and four star skills, you realise why I’ve chosen to recommend him. I managed to get all this for a mere £700,000 – not bad for a man who reportedly ran the 100m in 10.8 seconds!

And if it’s bargains you’re looking for, Jacob Murphy is the one for you. Priced at just £35,000, Norwich City will ask for £180,000. But you don’t even need to pay that much – I had a bid of £100,000 accepted, and I’m sure with a little bargaining you can get him for less. His pace is definitely his main attribute, but he should be able to hold his own against lower league defences and should grow very quickly given his current OVR and high potential.

***

The articles in this series should give you some ideas if you’re looking for a new signing in a key area. There is one article for each position on the pitch to make it easy for you to quickly find players to bolster your squad.

All of the players given here have a minimum potential of 80, so you know you’re getting quality. The maximum OVR for each player is 73, both to keep transfer prices down and to avoid presenting you with too many options and thus making it too difficult to choose the player you need.

The ‘Avai?’ column is short for ‘available?’ and refers both to whether or not you can buy the specified player at the start of the first season and how long their current contract is. Let’s take Y/2 as an example – Y means that yes, you can buy him at the start of a new career, and the number means he has two years left on his contract. Similarly, N/3 would mean that no, you can’t buy the player straight away, and he has three years left on his contract. These ‘no’ players are often available for transfer if you wait until the January transfer window, however. For some players this column is blank – this means that they are out on loan at the start and are therefore unavailable for purchase until the second season.

Initial player costs may seem very low this year. The figure in the player cost column refers to the price you are given if you scout the player. But I’ve also added a new column this time round – ‘They want’. This refers to the price the other team want for the player if you enquire about him. Often there is a large difference between the player cost obtained through scouting and that obtained through an enquiry. This leaves a lot of room for negotiation, so don’t be put off if a price in the ‘They want’ column is high, as you can usually get the player for much less. Try bidding lower than what you think will be accepted – you may be surprised at their response. If the ‘They want’ column is blank it’s because the team refused to give a price, either because the player has just joined them or because they are loaning him in.

And as a final note, in FIFA 14 EA update player OVRs and potentials every week. Mose of the time these are very minor changes, and most players won’t be affected at all unless they have had a very noteworthy week. Furthermore, some players occasionally disappear if they have been put in the reserve squad that week. So just bear in mind that these figures should be read as a guide only and not a definitive account of player costs, potentials, etc, for the entire season.[/expand]
